Recognized as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World," Kachemak Bay and Homer Alaska are well recognized as a popular destination for recreation fishing for Alaska halibut and salmon. Halibut range from an average day of fishing of 20 to 30 pound fish, to well over 300 pounds! On most days we usually succeed in catching one or more fish over 40 pounds.
While the focus of these trips is fishing, it is also a great opportunity for wildlife viewing and wildlife photography. You will see a diversity of marine birds, lots of sea otters, and reasonable chance of seeing humback and other whales, as well as porpoises ... especially on the calm whether days that are condusive to fishing the more distant fishing spots.
There are many fishing charter operations in the Homer, Kachemak Bay, and the Southcentral Alaska area. We differ from many operators in our approach and priorities: quality over quanity, small group options, family friendly, and environmentally oriented.
We hope you will enjoy some photos from the past few years.
Unlike many charters, we focus of groups of three of four people, typically families or groups of friends. If you book three fisherman, you will book the boat. We also provide a $25 per person discount for four fisherman. Customers like the focus on quality and personalized service, and the ability to limit the boat to family and or a group of friends. Less lines in the water often means less tangling of lines, more time fishing, and quality trip fishing with families and friends.
Family and kids are welcome and encouraged to join in the fun! The joy of seeing a young child experience their first halibut, or on that luck day -- a 100 pound halibut -- is hard to beat! To encourage youth to participate in fishing, we have established a discounted rate of $75 per child 15 or under with four full-paying passengers. For reservations made by April 15, the cost will be $50/child.
We offer combined halibut and salmon fishing trips in the Kachemak Bay and Homer Alaska area. June and July are great times for combos with king salmon. The silver salmon typically start to arrive in late July and run through August. On average, combos trips typically last a few hours longer than halibut fishing trips. However, if it is large halibut that you are after, you may wish to book a halibut charter. Depending on weather and where the fish are biting, will will move around two or more places in pursuit of larger fish.
When you shop around, you will find that our prices are very competitive, especially considering we limit our trips to four individuals (and an additional two children). We are able to keep our prices down with the use of a safe and energy efficient boat. The Lady Hawke was remotored in 2007 from a gas engine to a new diesel Volvo Penta engine that achieves an approximately 40% increase in fuel effiency. We pass the savings on to you through competitive prices and smaller groups to give you best experience! Our engine exceeds new EPA emission standards, and result is less carbon emissions per trip and passenger. Moreover, we offer the passenger the option to purchasing carbon credits to mitigate the carbon footprint of your trip.
Whether you interests focus on multiple fishing trips or a diversity experiences, we offer discounts for multiple day trips based out of Homer. In partnership with the Alaska Adventure Cabins, we also offer adventure and lodging packages. This will help the visitor to both save money and more fully experience and benefit from all that Kachemak Bay region and the greater Homer community has to offer. For the visitors that are planning a long stay of three or more days in the Homer Alaska and Kachemak Bay area, we have developed a partnership with one of Homer's quality cabin rental, Alaska Adventure Cabins. The incredible views, homey feeling, and cost savings that such a cabin rental and this partnership offers could be an attractive alternative for many visitors.
The Homer Halibut Derby is the biggest halibut derby in Alaska. 2008's Jackpot was a 348.2 lb. fish, with a winning of over $45,000! In 2008, we caught three halibut that would have been in the money (monthly contests) is the fisherman bought tickets! We sell tickets on board, which may be purchased before we leave the harbor.
We also filet all fish as part of your trip, usually on board on the return so that you arrive with filets for processing (fish larger than 100 lb. will be cleaned at the harbor). Typically we stop at a quite cove or bay on return to enjoy scenery, take pictures of your fish, and process fish. Local processors will pick up filets for processing at the boat slip, or you may transfer to your coolers for later processing. No mess ... no fuss!
